Women on the Water 2014

It's been a lovely summer. Here's a little sample of the fun the Women on the Water have been having over this past year or so.

Adventure is out there!

Monday, August 18, I had just claimed how difficult it was to come up with new images and stories for the blog. I mean seriously, this is the boat, here are the people, there's the water, see us row. That said, it was but a few minutes later we couldn't hear ourselves talk (as we were practiced our Atlantic Challenge maneuver called man- overboard - more on that another time). There, overhead was a helicopter. For a minute we thought we had been caught with our bobber out and were in serious trouble. Police! Did it really require the police - question mark? But no, turns out it was something else all together.

As we gazed up  police boats rocked and rolled us from both sides (below: small boat to the left of the sailboat). Add blinking lights at Thea's Park and the stories started flowing.
Thank goodness the police boats continued on.
Whew, we were glad we weren't in trouble.
We had planned on doing a collective cry if we were in trouble.
Giggle - we know how to play the game.
Then we noticed that the police boats weren't letting anyone travel down the waterway.
This is curious. Sort of. Several had a meeting they needed to attend yet the wait continued.

And then we remembered the radio. In between the long pauses we heard that
Randy got dropped off. Whoever he is?

And then we noticed three guys hanging onto the cable. OMG!
After many minutes the maneuver apparently over the helicopter landed at Thea's Park.
Some closed their eyes because it looked dangerous.
Others noticed the boats held at bay took off  into the waterway like
would-be brides at a Filene's Bargain Basement sale on wedding dresses!
Just get out of their way sistah!
So, this is just a reminder... you get what you asked for so think before you speak!
I'm just saying - from experience...
Or you could read up before you head out or afterwards...
Either way, if you look for adventure you often times get it.

The Tacoma Fire Department, Seattle Fire Department and King County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint training demonstration along the Thea Foss Waterway on Aug. 18.

In conjunction with the Marine Security West 2014 Conference in Tacoma, the King County Sheriff Office’s Guardian 2 helicopter will demonstrate an Airborne Tactical Extraction Platform (AirTEP) deployment by inserting a Seattle Fire Department rescue swim team into a simulated water rescue scenario.

A helispot landing zone will be set up at Thea’s Park (405 Dock St.) from 1 - 6 p.m. For safety purposes, Thea’s Park will be closed to the public during this timeframe, and the mouth of the Thea Foss Waterway will close to public vessel traffic from approximately 4 - 4:45 p.m. during the live demonstration.

Lammastide

For those living in rhythm with the seasons, Lammastide is the celebration of First Harvest. Typically celebrated around August 1. It is a celebration of reaping what has been sown, with friends, neighbors, kindred spirits, and all of nature around us.

Not everyone is aware of these old words or customs but intuitively we know them. We all know this is a wonderful time of the year to break bread (BBQ or picnic) with others in natural settings while the weather is good. The WOWers are no exception, we know how to celebrate the seasons of life. The bounty of food these last two weeks has been phenomenal. See...

Here's one recipe I am sure you don't have:

Olive Oil Cake

1 cup extra virgin olive oil, plus one tablespoon for greasing the pan
4 large eggs
Zest of one lemon, Zest of one orange
200 grams sugar
100 grams almond flour
50 grams bread crumbs (for gluten free, use additional almond flour instead)
1 tsp. baking powder

1. In a medium bowl, combine the olive oil, eggs and citrus zest.  Whisk until the egg yolks are incorporated.
2. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, almond flour, bread crumbs and baking powder.
3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until combined.
4. Grease the cast iron pan with the remaining olive oil.
5. Pour the cake batter into the greased pan, and place it in a cold oven.
6. Turn the oven on, set to 350 degrees.
7. Bake for 30-35 minutes. To check if done, insert a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, remove cake from oven. Let rest 15 minutes.
