Youth Marine Foundation Fundraiser

This year's annual fundraising dinner for the Youth Marine Foundation (our home digs) was a grand success. The WOWers provided the cookies. If I counted correctly there were 17 different kinds. OMG! We had cookies everywhere!

Special thanks to the servers: Muriel, Jan W (Suzie Q), Kathleen, Jennifer, Jan W (Science Jan), Terese, and Dorothy. Thank you to all the cookie makers...
this crew plus Terri, Jan B (Library Jan), Jill, Leslie, Teresa O. and Nancy.
WOW!
Thank you WOWers!

Check out our new Verite book banner!
Thank you Jennifer!

Yes, in shameless self promotion, we snuck our cloth book and published paperback book and banner into the festivities. After all, the evening was all about the youth.
Oh, youth, I thought you said youthful?

For the young at heart and spirit...
on Monday, it's back to work with out paint clothes on to try
and finish up on the boat.
We can't hardly wait until she is back in the water.

Voski Sprague

Voski
March 13, 1945 - June 2019

Her spirit is free. It is hard to know where her spirit will go... she had so many loves.
She loved the water and being on the Salish Sea.
She often expressed this with sumi-e and haiku.
She respected Matsuo Basho's work.

The Shallows
The shallows -
             A crane's thighs splash
 in cool waters.
                          -Matsuo Basho

She loved the land and all the earth.
Her garden was a wonder.
She rejoiced at nature's workings.
She celebrated little things, passages in time and great accomplishments.

Temple Bells
   Temple bells dies out
                  The fragrant blossoms remain
A perfect evening!
                              - Matsuo Basho

She was creative, clever, and resourceful.
She made things happen.
She gave everything to this life.
Her love of her family, friends and neighbors was unlimited.
This is why it is so hard to let go...

Spring is Passing
Spring is passing
The birds cry and the fishes fill
          With tears on their eyes.
                                          - Matsuo Basho

It is with great joy we say she was one of us...
the Women on the Water.
It is so very hard to say good bye.

Warm Summer Sun
by Mark Twain

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here,
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
 Good night, good night.

Voski - we love you!

Please take a moment and listen to the last gift she gave us:

Seventy 48

The news as we know it:
Our Women on the Water book got accepted into the "All Stitched Up" show at the Collins Library at University of Puget Sound. The show starts in September so watch for more news.

We have been working on oars and floorboards while on of the planks is being refitted and the ribs redone - major work. I haven't been good about taking pictures but it is mostly like watching paint dry.

In the meantime we have done some other activities to keep us from breathing down the necks of those doing the hard stuff. We are just so anxious to be back on the water!!!
This last Friday night a gang of us stood on the Murray Morgan - 11th Street bridge to watch and cheer on the participants of the Seventy 48 race. It was great watching them head out the Foss Waterway. I think almost every type of hand powered boat ever made was represented.
The first one that makes it to Port Townsend is the winner!

The photo boat gets into position

Way down the waterway in front of the Glass Museum - the boats are all lined up -
waiting for the signal.

These ones were fast!

The pinks looked sharp.

Sure, you can bicycle to Port Townsend!

We heard the kids on this trimaran were from Colorado and
they trained on a lake at night so they would be prepared to paddle through the night.

Looks like they let the pirates in too.

 There they go....

Waiting for the last boat to go under the bridge....

Tomorrow it is back to boat saucing the oars.
